The General Medical Council have made the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, which are set out in the Schedule to this Order, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 34E(1) and (2) of the Medical Act 1983( 1).

By virtue of section 34E(6) of that Act, such Regulations shall not have effect until approved by Order of the Privy Council.

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations Order of Council 2024 and comes into force on 31st January 2025.

2.  Their Lordships are pleased to and do approve the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 which are set out in the Schedule to this Order.

Article 2

Schedule The General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2024

  The General Medical Council make the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by section 34E(1) and (2) of the Medical Act 1983.

Citation and commencement

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 and come into force on 31st January 2025.

Amendments

2.—(1) The General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) Regulations 2010( 2) are amended as follows.

(2) In regulation 5 (evidence), after sub-paragraph (1)(l) insert( 3)—

(m) a copy of a specified state qualification( 4) . .

(3) In regulation 8 (determination of applications), in paragraph (1) delete—

, subject to paragraph (2), .

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order of Council)

This Order approves and gives effect to the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2024. Those Regulations amend the General Medical Council (Applications for General Practice and Specialist Registration) Regulations 2010 (scheduled to S.I. 2010/475) (“ the principal Regulations”). The principal Regulations provide for the form of, and procedure relating to, applications for inclusion in the General Medical Council’s General Practitioner Register or Specialist Register.

Regulation 2(2) amends regulation 5 of the principal Regulations in that it inserts a new provision for evidence to be provided by applicants seeking to join the General Practitioner Register or Specialist Register, who are entitled to have their relevant qualification recognised by virtue of Part 2 of the Recognition of Professional Qualifications and Implementation of International Recognitions Agreements (Amendment) Regulations 2023 ( S.I. 2023/1286).

Regulation 2(3) is a correction. It amends regulation 8 of the principal Regulations in that it deletes reference to a paragraph previously revoked.

No impact assessment has been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary sector or community bodies is foreseen.
